Kathy Vergara is the director of multilingual services for Klein Independent School District in Texas. She has dedicated her professional career to serving the emergent bilingual (English learner) community as a bilingual teacher, language instructional specialist, instructional officer, and now director. She is passionate about shifting mindsets to better support historically underserved students through equitable opportunities.
Kathy is currently a fellow for Latinos for Education, a nonprofit organization focusing on closing opportunity gaps for Latinx students and their families. She served at the state level in the Dual Language Guidance Committee and Community of Practice committees focusing on biliteracy and dual language education. In 2021, Kathy was recognized by the Texas Education Agency’s English Learner Division as providing equitable opportunities through the strategic rollout of biliteracy curriculum and pedagogy to eighteen campuses.
Kathy is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of St. Thomas, where she is slated to receive her degree in May 2023 in ethical leadership and social justice. She earned a bachelor's degree in Spanish from the University of Houston, a master’s degree from Texas A&M University in educational psychology, and a second master’s degree from the University of St. Thomas in educational leadership for culturally and linguistically diverse students.
